Hello

I want to share with you my journey creating a 2D game within the Unity Game Engine. I had the chance to work with a wonderful artist, Trieu N., who created all of the sprite works that you see in the game.

The game that we created is called Space Cat. It is a 2D platformer with unique elements such as, shooting, power ups, and more. As a small backstory, you are a Cat whose friend has been taken by the Overlord. Your goal is to defeat evil cats and save your friend so that you may live in peace. Some of the mechanics that you experience in the game are, 2D movement, intelligent AI movement patterns, and a health system. There is a unique challenge in which players will face and create unique experiences.

So far, we have created two levels that feature wildly different aesthetics and mechanics. I would describe the first level as a ‘tutorial’ level as it aims to introduce the player to the control scheme as well as basic mechanics such as shooting and enemies. The second level starts to feature new mechanics such as power-ups and a boss. The goal of new levels was to add a new mechanic for the player to interact with, as this would keep the game feeling fresh.

Coming from zero experience in creating a game, this turned out to be a tough experience from which I was able to learn a lot from. Communication between my partner had to be clear and I now feel very confident in my programming skills. While the game may not be polished to a high standard, with a couple more updates, the game could be very promising.

If I were to take this game even further, my next steps would be to port the game so that it would be playable on a phone. The concept/controls seem like a perfect fit.
